ONCE UPON A TIME: Sandatharaka Abeysinghe

8 April - 9 May 2026
  • Unfolding as the second chapter of Sandatharaka Abeysinghe’s underwater universe, 'Once Upon a Time' deepens the lore. The universe we are introduced to is one where the lines between the terrestrial and aquatic worlds coalesce into one another. Abeysinghe builds a magical world where the laws of nature that govern the world as we know it become insignificant.
  • It is a realm where a single leaf could rise several thousand feet above the land, reaching heights taller than trees to become a canopied shelter. Vibrant plants that would exist in biomes that are created separate by geographies and climates, congregate within a singular zone; shared by beings both humans and animals.

The exhibition unfurls as a celebration that is underway in this land that exists deep under the sea. As the water currents move, and the petals of giant hibiscus gently fold, it parts the way taking us deeper into the ocean. We encounter congregations of birds, and bees, costumed performers, who meander through the waters - led by waterlily touchstones, and paths among trees leading towards a hidden destination.

  • While rooted in a rich cultural history of the artist’s home country, with its traditions of ritual performers, and Kandyan dancers, they criss-cross paths with wayfarers from distant regions, both mythical and real. It imagines an existence human kind has imagined, but never cocreated in the world above ground.

  • Histories, cultures, and memories

    braid into one another,

    mirroring the ecosystem

    they are a part of.

  • The magic is intensified through the subtle bending of reality. Light illuminating the dark ocean. Mist. Flowers that seldom lose colour, despite the water currents constantly brushing against them. Creatures of flight soaring in the absence of air. Magic becomes the anchor that permits the braiding of different time zones, histories, cultures, life forms and memories - each flowing into each other with a fluidity that mirrors the ecosystem they are a part of. Sandatahraka’s underwater world is a haven for coexistence - the rigid categorisations of the modern world having sublimated.

  • Flowers and leaves nod

    in gentle agreement,

    as the waves part,

taking us deeper into the ocean.

  • What began as an experiment inspired by Ilya Repin’s Sadko in the Underwater Kingdom , has culminated into a world building exercise. In creating a world that is caught in a flux, between tradition and modernity, past and the present, between worlds, Sandatharaka Abeysinghe reveals a desire and dream shared by many among us. It is a world where differences flourish without erasure, and the human touch has not turned verdant greens into dust lands.
