Anupa Perera employs inanimate objects as metaphors to provoke critical reflection on urgent social and cultural issues. The still-life work Meat and Flies juxtaposes metal piercing raw flesh with Gustave Courbet’s The Origin of the World. This deliberate pairing creates a tension within the composition, eliciting a visceral response through the contrast between the mutilated flesh and the vulnerable female body depicted in the painting. Created in response to the pervasive realities of female sexual violence and homicide in both public and domestic spaces, the work confronts the brutality that continues to affect countless women.
