ELYSIUM: GAYAN PRAGEETH
Past exhibition
Overview
Elysium serves as a profound meditation on the far-reaching implications of ethno-nationalism and cultural imperialism, delving into the complex interplay of identity, heritage, and international dynamics. Intricately constructed images and symbols take on a surrealist form inviting the viewer to contemplate the country’s uncertain future in the face of external influences .
Drawing on themes explored in Eyes Only and Since 1983, Prageeth continues his inquiry into beautification. The oriental imagery of lotus fields, delicate lace dresses and porcelain china give way to darker narratives of neo colonialism, corruption and misgovernance. Prageeth’s visual sensibility challenges the audience to confront the dichotomy between aesthetic and narrative.
