My works talk about my lost identity through social construction, and power. Birthplace defines my identity and social construct is one of the ways of expressing my identity. I questioned the alteration made to the social identity by power, argument, and social practice in recent years. I argue that attention needs to be given to dynamics in the identity. This perspective is explicit of the disrespect given to the society. I want to show that the all-presence of identity-related argument across social and contexts reflects the fact that group identity is a basis for social power. My works talk about reality and gaps in the social construct through the act of cutting out photographs and tangled images. - Kanesh ThabendranKanesh ThabendranTilted I, 2020Mixed Media on Paper47 x 35 cm

Nuwan Nalaka
Birth of RagaBirth of Raga explores the story of the Buddhist scripture when Mara's three daughters,Taṇhā, Rati, and Rāga (thirst, desire, and delight) endeavoured on a journey to tempt Buddha. Nuwan Nalaka explores the concept of desire and purity in two different ways (dark and light). In Birth of Raga the lotus flower seemingly symbolises the purity however there is also a darker side to it as beaneath it lurks the multiheaded snake. There is a deep underlying awareness of judgement as the artist has depicted through the many singular eyes illustrated across the artwork. The nude figures symbolising the beauty of the feminine body in it's natural state simultaneously representing the desire that Buddha was sent to face. Birth of Raga seeks to explore the dichotomy of symbols signifiying purity and darkness.

The Life Beyond The Veil
The Life Beyond the Veil , 2020Inspired by my urge to return to nature after a period of hibernation and lockdown, these works play between nature (or what I call the divine feminine) and the control and power nature has over us regardless of humanity’s complex interactions with the natural world. I explore nature’s scientific phenomena and visual complexity, as well as its role as the wellspring for all human experience. Using nebulous creatures and landscapes as a narrative source, where the whimsical and the actual coexist.
