Gunarathne draws from the experience of living in a foreign space, inspired by the artist's observation of the many migrants and refugees. The artist builds up the vibrant colours in layers with watercolours and uses pigment pens to give form to each structure and figures. The lone figures of the compositions are a testament to the artist's anxieties of isolation, foregrounded by patterns that resemble architectural structures and patterned textiles.
