Arranged in groups of eight across four rows, Lights is Thenuwara’s commentary on the rampant outcropping of stupas across the country as political parties aspire to come into power by appealing to religious sentiments. The work is a continuation of Thenuwara’s commentary on the volatile environment in Sri Lanka where democratic election campaigns become propagating grounds for militarism, religious extremism, conspiracy theories, Sinhala chauvinism, narrow-minded nationalism, anti-western agitation, socialism, etc. through which people’s sentiments are manipulated to rally their support.
