Hema Shironi’s work intimately explores themes of displacement, migration, and the enduring impact of conflict, deeply rooted in her experiences in Sri Lanka. The house, both a symbol of shelter and a vessel for human values, serves as a central motif in her art, representing the ever-shifting nature of home. Through her use of fabric—folded, stored, and rearranged—Shironi evokes the transient quality of home and the emotional weight of migration. Her running stitches are act as delicate threads of memory and healing, marking new pathways of recovery, in the same way the Kantha making practice served as a means to record narratives of migration in Bengal.
