The work depicts the lingering atmosphere of fear in the aftermath of war as a mother continues to protect and safeguard their child. The Mother and Child has been a recurrent theme in Chandraguptha Thenuwara's four-decade-long practice. Borrowing its inspiration from Byzantine iconography of the precious bond shared between a mother and child, the partly autobiographical work reflects on the anguish caused by war on the innocent victims of war.
