Rajni Perera holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design. A Sri-Lankan born artist based in Toronto, whose work floats between Western and Immigrant culture, Perera’s work is an East-West dialogue of ideas, concerning immigrant identity issues, female sexuality, and science fiction and fantasy. Her medium of self-portraiture and portraiture is investigated as a window into the practices of the glitterati that commissioned some of the first portraiture around turn of the century India. She explores ‘issues of hybridity, sacrilege, irreverence, the indexical sciences, ethnography, gender, sexuality, popular culture, deities, monsters and dream worlds’ through painting and painted photography marrying these themes marry in a ‘newly objectified realm of mythical symbioses’. By flattening her narrative on the medium the artist seeks to challenge contemporary notions of masculinity and the aesthetic treatment of gender as well as the non-European sacred and secular body in a popular culture context. The artists’ exaggerated depiction of her subjects in these portraits presents her subject in an exotic and fantastical nature with surrounding symbolism that communicates the artists relation to her origins as well as her diasporic views. The artist begins her creative process by photographing her subject and then working on the image ‘embellishing’ the portrait using miniature painting techniques.
